Kids teachable moments

As a mother, you might often feel like you’re too busy, too tired, or too overwhelmed to recognize the teachable moments that happen every day. But the truth is, these moments are always there if you’re willing to slow down and look for them.

Motherhood is a constant opportunity to shape, teach, and guide. But as my children grow, I’ve realized that teaching doesn't always look like sitting down for a formal lesson. Instead, it’s about seizing the small, everyday moments when you can help your child learn something meaningful—whether it’s a life skill, a character trait, or even a deeper understanding of the world around them.

A Teachable Moment in Action

One winter morning, while I was caring for an elderly woman, my 3-year-old son and I would frequently visit her home. She had a beautiful rock bed outside that caught his attention each time. On this particular day, he was picking up rocks and tossing them around, clearly more interested in throwing them than anything else. Initially, I felt myself getting frustrated, but then I heard the Holy Spirit speak to me, “What if you turned this into a teachable moment?”

And that’s when inspiration struck. I thought of color sorting and began to ask him to find specific colors of rocks. “Can you find me three white rocks? How about some black or gray ones?”

As he picked them up, I turned it into a simple math exercise—counting the rocks, sorting them, and even arranging them into a circle. What happened next was miraculous: he stopped throwing the rocks and began learning. His focus shifted, and instead of feeling frustrated, I was able to help him engage with the environment in a new way.

This was a perfect example of a teachable moment. The time spent outside could have easily been another moment of frustration, but with just a little initiative and the right mindset, it turned into a valuable lesson.

What Are Teachable Moments?

Teachable moments are those unplanned, spontaneous moments when a child has an opportunity to learn from what’s happening around them. These moments often arise naturally through everyday life. It could be something as simple as observing nature, engaging in a daily task, or even when a challenge arises. The key is in how you approach these moments and turn them into learning opportunities.

How to Find Teachable Moments

We often don’t recognize teachable moments because we’re so caught up in the routine of life. But if we’re intentional about slowing down and being present, we can see them everywhere. Here are a few ways to start noticing them:

  1. Be Present: Often, teachable moments come when you’re fully engaged with your child. Put away distractions and focus on what’s happening around you.

  2. Be Curious: Ask questions about what your child is doing. Observe their actions, and think about how you can use that moment to introduce a new concept or lesson.

  3. Embrace the Unexpected: Sometimes, the best teachable moments come from what might seem like a “problem” or an unexpected situation. Instead of reacting immediately, ask yourself if there’s an opportunity to teach in the moment.

What to Do When You Find Those Moments

Once you recognize a teachable moment, the next step is to know how to use it effectively. Here’s what you can do:

  1. Be Flexible: Don’t be afraid to switch gears if necessary. If your child is focused on something in particular, let that lead the lesson. In the rocks example, I could have been rigid and stuck to my plan, but instead, I adapted to the moment and allowed it to unfold naturally.

  2. Ask Questions: Engaging your child’s mind through questions is one of the most effective ways to teach. In my case with the rocks, I asked, “Can you find rocks that are white?” and “Can you find rocks that are black or gray?” This not only turned the situation into a learning opportunity, but it also helped my son focus and engage more deeply with what was around him.

  3. Be Patient and Encouraging: Not every teachable moment will result in a perfectly smooth lesson. Stay patient, and provide encouragement as your child learns. It’s important to make the learning process enjoyable and to celebrate the small victories along the way.

Instructive Tips for Finding Teachable Moments

So, how do you start finding teachable moments in your everyday life? Here are three tips to help you along the way:

  1. Slow Down and Observe: Take a moment to pause and notice what your child is doing. Whether they’re playing, interacting with others, or even struggling with something, there’s always an opportunity to teach.

  2. Make It Fun: Turn everyday tasks into learning experiences. From sorting laundry to baking cookies, there’s always a way to make even the simplest activities an opportunity for learning.

  3. Engage with Their Interests: Use what your child is passionate about to create teachable moments. If they’re interested in animals, for example, you can teach them about different species, their habitats, and more as you go through your day.

Every day, there are teachable moments waiting to be discovered. They might come when you least expect it—during a walk, a meal, or even in a moment of conflict. By being present and open to learning, you’ll start to see them more clearly.

By being intentional and present, we can create an environment that fosters growth and learning, even in the simplest moments of our day.
